The defendant, Kerlyn Taveras, is accused of multiple charges, including aggravated sexual assault, home invasion and strangulation against an ex-girlfriend, the News-Times said.

Taveras was under several protective orders restricting him from contact with the woman before he allegedly committed the assault in May 2014, reported the News-Times.

He refused a plea deal and instead decided to go to trial, and he faces up to 100 years in prison, the News-Times noted.
